Ready to get your claws into cat parenting? Adopting a kitten can be a hugely rewarding experience – but it’s not a spur-of-the-moment decision. In the UK, there are certain hoops you have to jump through. (We know – how dog coded.) But fear not. Because here’s what you need to know.

Minimum requirements: what shelters want

Before you start daydreaming about cuddle sessions and endless purrs? You need to understand what shelters in the UK are looking for. Because not every one gets a pass to adopt a kitten. Here’s the lowdown:

Age and consent

Most shelters require adopters to be over 18 years old. Sorry, kids. You'll have to wait a bit longer before you can officially become a cat parent.

Consistency

Shelters prefer individuals or families with stable living situations. Cats are creatures of habit, and constant upheaval can stress them out. Cue overgrooming. Protest pees. And a bad situation for kitten and cat parent alike.

Financial stability

Cats may be small, but their expenses can add up. From food to vet bills, you need to show that you're financially capable of providing for your new kitten.

Landlord's approval

If you're renting, you'll typically need your landlord's consent to bring a cat into your home. It's always a good idea to check your tenancy agreement for any pet clauses.

Patience and understanding

Kittens are adorable, but they can also be a handful. Shelters want adopters who understand the commitment involved in raising a cat and are willing to be patient during the adjustment period.

The Adoption Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

Now that you meet the basic requirements, let's dive into the adoption process itself. Here's a handy guide to help you navigate the kitten adoption maze:

Step one: Research shelters

Start by researching shelters and rescue organisations in your area. Check out their websites or give them a call to learn about their adoption procedures and available kittens.

Step two: Pay them a visit

Once you've identified a few potential shelters, pay them a visit. Take the time to interact with the kittens and see which one steals your heart. It's like speed dating, but with furballs.

Step three: Fill out an application

If you've found your perfect match, it's time to fill out an adoption application. Be honest and provide all the necessary information requested by the shelter.

Step four: Host a home visit

Some shelters may conduct a home visit to ensure that your living space is suitable for a cat. Don't worry; they're not there to inspect your dusting skills — just to make sure you have a safe environment for your new kitten.

Step five: stump up for the adoption fee

Most shelters charge an adoption fee, which helps cover the cost of vaccinations, microchipping, and other medical expenses. It's a small price to pay for a lifetime of companionship.

Step six: Take your kitten home

Once your application is approved and the adoption fee is paid, it's time to bring your kitten home! Make sure you have all the necessary supplies ready, including food, litter, and toys. Read more about getting ready for a new kitten here.

Step seven: Help them settle in

The first few days at home can be overwhelming for your new kitten. Give them time to adjust to their new surroundings and provide plenty of love and attention. You can read more about how to get through the first few days with a kitten here.

Remember that adopting a kitten is a lifelong commitment. So be prepared to shower them with love, care, and the occasional treat. (Our Chicken or Salmon Nibbles would do the trick.) Happy kitten parenting!
