NASA STREAMS HIGH-DEF CAT VIDEO FROM SPACE

Cat videos? They’re out of this world.

Literally. 

Because Nasa scientists recently streamed a short video of Taters the orange tabby from deep space. Nearly 19 million miles away. Which is equivalent to 250,634,918,033 tubes of Chicken Nibbles stacked on top of each other. (Yep. We counted.) Using a flight laser transceiver — aka: a very swanky laser beam. 

This is the first ultra-HD video transmitted from space via laser. Ever. And the experiment forms part of efforts to revolutionise communication between Earth and deep space. With Nasa claiming the technological leap could even help send humans to Mars.

Good job, Taters.

The clip featured Taters chasing a laser pointer. And was uploaded to Nasa’s Psyche spacecraft in October last year. Before being transmitted back to Earth on 11th December — taking only 101 seconds to reach viewers below. A breakneck speed that trumps most broadband internet. 

Pamela Melroy, deputy administrator of the space agency, said in a statement: “Increasing our bandwidth is essential to achieving our future exploration and science goals, and we look forward to the continued advancement of this technology and the transformation of how we communicate during future interplanetary missions.”
